How plants make energy

Photosynthesis converts light energy into chemical energy stored as glucose. It happens in two stages working together.

Light reactions capture photons in the thylakoid membrane to make ATP and NADPH. Oxygen is released as a by-product.
Calvin cycle uses ATP and NADPH to fix CO₂ into glucose in the stroma.
Chlorophyll in the thylakoid membrane absorbs red and blue wavelengths most efficiently.
