How plants make energy

Photosynthesis converts light energy into chemical energy stored as glucose. It happens in two stages working together.

  • Light reactions capture photons in the thylakoid membrane to make ATP and NADPH. Oxygen is released as a by-product.
  • Calvin cycle uses ATP and NADPH to fix COโ‚‚ into glucose in the stroma.
  • Chlorophyll in the thylakoid membrane absorbs red and blue wavelengths most efficiently.

๐Ÿ’ก Exam tip

Light reactions need light; the Calvin cycle does not โ€” but depends on their output.
